Saratoga Stampede Grabs State Championship


UTICA -- Saratoga Stampede is the best Legion baseball team in New York State. 

The team scored a total of 23 runs on 22 hits in two games to win the American Legion Baseball State Championship on Aug. 5 at Murnane Field.


Saratoga defeated Saugerties 10-2 in the first game. Kyle Willmott and Chris Pescetti each drove in three runs, and Brent Merriman pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out five, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reported.

"Saratoga continued its hot hitting in the championship, defeating Middletown 13-5," the paper reported. "Merriman came up big at the plate, with two hits and four RBIs, and Willmott and Matt Flynn each drove in a pair of runs. Bryan Carr picked up the complete-game victory."

Eight teams competed in the tournament, including the 2011 defending chanpions Whitestown Post. Other teams were: Jurek (Swormville Post), Braman Post (Penfield), Oneonta Green Wave, and Adrean Post (Utica).

Saratoga moves on to the Northeast Regional championship, which starts Aug. 9 in Old Orchard Beach, Maine.
